Theatre Anu – An extraordinary experience

…what was so special about this theatre? …when I first read “poetic theatre forms in public space”, I couldn’t understand at first, but the idea was so plausibly simple as well as complex to realize. In this kind of walk-on stage, I wouldn’t just be a spectator, I would find myself in the middle of the stages, in the middle of the story itself. The imagination inspired me and was simply fascinating. The impression of “poetic worlds” in an unenclosed theatre space promised an encounter with the unknown, and quite often the unknown was oneself. For several hours I was diving into a virtual soap bubble of non-time and deceleration. It took a little while for my mind to get involved, but after that my old daily ways of thinking disappeared and I was charmed by the unique atmosphere, with its colorful created images and self-experiences. Experiences that dissolved and merged the boundaries between the viewer and the viewed.

Theatre Anu understands itself in the tradition of storytelling and this is exactly what is grandly realized in their unique productions.

Valencia by Light

It is well known that Spanish cities are buzzing with life. Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia are grandiose, stylish cities with a lively heart and gigantic buildings. At night, life on the streets calms down and thousands of small bulbs and LED lamps bathe the cities in an unknown, magical charm. The cities show now a new colourful side and formerly grey and desolate buildings shine like colourful emeralds in the darkened sky. This change surprises me again and again and sometimes, when I look at the surrounding on my trip through the nocturnal silence, I have to stop and to realise where I was and where I am right now.

Valencia has a very special treasure: the city of art and science. A complex of buildings that arose in a period of irrationality in the old river bed of the Turia and it has become an unmistakable symbol of Valencia. It’s not just the unique architecture that excited me in advance, it’s also the hidden functionality of concert halls, cinemas or museums that are hidden behind walls made of concrete, metal and glass. If you are lucky enough to catch one of these warm, clear summer nights, you should enjoy this luck and you should take a lot of time to look closely at the play of shapes and colours.

Gent by Light

After the sun had disappeared, we packed our backpacks and waited with excitement for the signal. I had sharpened my sensors and cleaned lens-eyes to capture every little nuance of light clouds in the coming hours of night. We would have to use the tripod to get the brilliant conception of Gent’s domestic light highlight on my memory card.
The city lit up again and the sophisticated lighting plan transformed the historical heritage of Ghent, with its rivers and monumental buildings, into a harmonious illustration. Not a mishmash of colours and lighting blobs, but a finely crafted network of atmosphere and accents that appropriately underlines the identity of the city of Ghent.
Designer Roland Jéol uses light as an essential and safeguarding component of city life and manages to create a classic composition of warmth and comfort, for which he ultimately received three stars in the Michelin Guide.
